Historical Background and legal Basis of the creation

In 1903, the first settlers of Barangay Buru-un are the Maranao tribes. They were the families of Muro mabalag, Casa Rogan and Camsia Bunglay, together with their respective families.

In 1908, after the first world war, there was an army man of the U.S. armed forces assigned in Iligan district is fond of having a hunting session in the forested area of barangay Buru-un. He met Maranao people living in the area named Rascal Maruhom and Lanto Didatu.

In many of their hunting sessions, Lanto Didatu became a hunting buddy of Sgt. Canoy and one day they came in the forested area to hunt birds. Canoy hit a bird named "buru-buru" in Maranao dialect. Accordingly, the name of the bird was taken from the word "buru-buru" water, means "spring", because the area have plenty of spring waters.

Later, Sgt. Miguel Canoy named the place "Buru-un" taken from the name of the bird "buru-buru".

In 1915, there was a couple named Eloy Nieves and Apay de la Calzada Samson, who were the first settlers of Timoga, a sitio of Buru-un. Eloy Nieves is a close relative of Sgt. Miguel Canoy from Cebu, who was hired as an entertainer, a singer composer, in the U.S. military camp in Iligan. Nieves was able to compose a song "tubig sama sa tinunaw nga tingga", means water like a melting lead. Eloy described the place rich in "spring waters". Later, Eloy Nieves named the place "Timoga", an acronym of such song. Then they left Timoga on 1921.

In 1922, another couple lived in Timoga in the person of Engr. Juan Macaraeg and Irenia de la Cruz. They had an only child named Evangeline de la Cruz Macaraeg, who happened to be the wife of the President of the Republic of the Philippines, His Excellency Diosdado Macapagal. They got married in 1946. Diosdado and Evangeline bore children, a boy and a girl, named Disodado, Jr. and Gloria Macaraeg Macapagal.

Gloria Macaraeg Macapagal married to Atty. Miguel Arroyo, and she became the14^th President of the Republic of the Philippines during the "people power 2" on January 20, 2001 in EDSA Manila.

In 1948, Antonio Lacida was appointed as the first Barrio Lieutenant of Buru-un by the members of the church organization of the Roman Catholic.

In 1950, Mauricio Banay-banay was then appointed as the second Barrio Lieutenant of Buru-un, still by the church members until 1960. And on that same year, the people of Barangay Buru-un elected the first Barangay Captain named Ambrocio Ancis and served until 1964.

In 1962, Barangay Buru-un finally become a Barrio by virtue of a resolution no. 134 series of 1962, which was approved on October 9, 1962, by the City government of Iligan.

In 1964, the people of Buru-un elected Roman Paradela as Barangay Captain and served until 1968. In that same year, the people of Buru-un elected Macabangkit Sangkay and served until 1972.

In 1972, Roman Paradela was again elected as Barangay Chairman and served until 1982. Regino Bariñan succeeded during the Barangay elections in 1982 and served as Barangay Chairman until 1997.

In 1997, Glenn Quijoy was elected as the Barangay Chairman of Buru-un and he was reelected on July, 2002 to serve for another term.
